Legislative Advocacy and Media Coalition

Each year, federal, state, and local legislatures introduce hundreds of bills that could violate the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of expression. The Media Coalition identifies, monitors, and acts on legislation in a variety of ways.

Tracking Important Legislation

Media Coalition maintains a watch list of bills that are of concern to members. Daily updates allow members and supporters to closely track the progress of the legislation.

Statements/Memos in Opposition

Media Coalition writes memos in opposition and letters to legislators that highlight constitutional problems with pending bills. These documents, which are issued on letterhead listing the members of the Coalition, are then circulated to the appropriate members of the legislature and their staff.

Bill Summaries

The summaries offered by Media Coalition clarify bill language and highlight possible points of concern for members.

A Network of Support

When Media Coalition determines that action is needed, it is aided by a network of lobbyists who are employed by members of the Coalition, members' state chapters, local retailers, free speech advocacy groups, and other allies that has been cultivated in the states over nearly forty years of defending free speech.
